Religious Trauma Support Groups

Join us for support in these challenging times, especially as the Winter holidays approach. Holy Questions is holding a support group for people who have been hurt by negative experiences with religion – Thursdays, December 5th, 12th, & 19th at 6:00-7:00 Pacific Time.

To receive a Zoom link for this free group, please fill out this Google Form.

This can be a hard time of year, and the recent election results make it even harder. Format is open so there is space to speak about whatever is on your mind:

  • How has church/religion hurt you?
  • Are you worried about family celebration?
  • How are you healing from religious trauma?
  • How are you finding your own spiritual or nonspiritual path?

Holy Questions has several members deconstructing their own religious trauma. As a community, we feel the call to reach out to others and create a mutually supportive space where we can heal together. No one will preach at you, pray at you, try to convert you, or otherwise push religious content; our only goal is to hold safe space for you and support you in asking your own questions and finding your own answers, whatever they may be.

Meetings will be on Zoom and sign-ups are required to receive the link. To sign up, please complete this Google form.

For safety, there will be a waiting room, the meeting will not be recorded, and chat will be limited. We encourage sharing your pronouns. As much as possible, we will also accommodate any different abilities. We do need cameras on for everyone’s feeling of safety, but can walk you through how to hide your view of yourself if that helps (and we know sometimes people just need short screen breaks.) Confidentiality is expected. We will also ask participants to not offer advice unless requested. All of these things will be reviewed each meeting.

The support group will be moderated by one of our members and our priest, both of whom have been deconstructing their trauma for years.

  • Beverly was raised in the Presbyterian church and spent many years as an atheist. She joined our services out of curiosity and has been key in our community’s process of asking questions.
  • Mir Plemmons, our priest, is an advocate in the Transgender and LGBTQ+ community, and speaks from a place of belonging to those communities while writing and speaking about Trans Theology. His background includes time in a deeply evangelical church, time in the pagan community, and many years in the Episcopalian church before coming to Inclusive Catholicism and the Ecumenical Catholic Communion.
  • Kris, our tech host, was raised in the Presbyterian and evangelical/pentecostal churches and came to ECC after many years church-less.

A Washington state licensed counselor has agreed to accept referrals for anyone who needs additional support. We can also help you find lists of trauma-informed counselors if you are outside Washington.

We hope to see you! Complete this Google form to receive a link.
